Maintaining the historical significance of historic districts involves preserving their buildings, landscapes, and cultural heritage for future generations. This includes protecting architectural styles, historical narratives, and the overall character of the area.

Phoenix’s historic preservation approvals and guidelines protect and maintain the city’s architectural heritage.

Unique historic district resources.

The city's Historic Preservation Office (HPO) performs design review for exterior changes to properties listed on the Phoenix Historic Property Register to ensure changes are compatible with the historic character of the property and/or historic district. This includes properties listed on the Phoenix Historic Property Register (i.e. properties with "HP" or "HP-L" overlay zoning), either individually or located in a district.

Financial Incentive Programs

The Exterior Rehabilitation Grant Program assists residents to sensitively rehabilitate historic homes while promoting reinvestment in Phoenix's historic neighborhoods. Owners of historic homes, either in City-designated historic districts or individually listed on the Phoenix Historic Property Register, are eligible to apply.

State Tax Incentives

The State of Arizona maintains a property tax reduction program for non-income-producing properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a property tax incentive program for income-producing properties. The Arizona State Historic Preservation Office in conjunction with the county assessors administers this program.
