Happiness is a Catio

An outdoor cat enclosure or a “catio” (cat patio) is the perfect solution to giving your cat an enriching environment while keeping them safe. It takes some thought, money, time, and work, but the rewards are worth it! My decision came after my cat was seriously injured by a car, and with my sister’s encouragement.

With research, I discovered there are multiple sizes and styles, from single units to elaborate modular systems. They are made of mesh, wire, metal, and/or wood. They can be with or without a frame or floor, and an entry is via a small cat flap in a window, door, or wall.

Order options include mass produced, design plans (with a list of needed materials), and pre-designed kits or custom kits including materials. Prices range from around $100 to thousands of dollars.

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.

Helpful Tips for Getting Started

  • Have a level foundation

  • Make it escape-proof

  • Include natural grass as flooring or a planter

  • Use strong wire and a grid size not more than 2 “ wide

  • Have both sunny and shady spots (canopy covers help)

  • Make it large enough to include you!

You can bring it to life with accessories that mimic their natural environment like a water fountain, hanging planters of catnip, bird feeders outside the catio, and a chair for you.

I decided on two catios – a metal-framed chicken coop and a pre-designed kit of two units connected by a bridge and a tunnel. I was very fortunate to have a skilled and kind neighbor help with the assembly and now I’m having fun decorating them! If you’re like me, you will love watching your cats enjoy their stimulating sanctuary! The peace of mind and lack of dead bird offerings are nice touch!
